Testing

The importance of testing all aspects of your PayPass implementation before pilot and rollout cannot be overstated. Testing is your opportunity to uncover any errors that may have occurred during development. In this section, you’ll find the information you need to certify your software and equipment, obtain cards for testing, and conduct comprehensive testing.

Certify Software and Equipment

To help ensure that all transactions follow your transaction process map correctly, certify your software and equipment with your acquirer and processor before your pilot or rollout.

Conduct Testing

You should contact your acquirer to discuss compliance testing. Test compliance with requirements for your systems and for each new terminal type or version using cards provided by your acquirer.

Certify Software and Equipment

To help ensure that all transactions follow your transaction process map correctly, certify your software and equipment with your acquirer and processor before your pilot or rollout. This will help ensure that your system is capable of:

  • Communicating between the reader and the POS
  • Communicating between the POS and the processor
  • Passing data between the processor and the acquirer
  • Successfully handling the typical conditions that will be encountered in a live transaction environment

Ensure that MasterCard PayPass reader and firmware are certified with your acquirer, processor and MasterCard for each type of transaction accepted at the POS: Credit, Signature Debit, and PIN Debit (if PIN suppression is not being used).

Request Cards for Testing

A number of cards are available to help you conduct your lab and pilot testing:

Decline cards (test cards)

Decline cards have no monetary value, are equipped with Dynamic CVC3, and will submit a transaction for authorization. The transaction will decline, since the cards have no monetary value, so these cards will not have a clearing record. You will only be able to monitor DE compliance in credit or PIN Debit authorization.

These credit or PIN Debit cards can be provided by MasterCard at no cost, but in limited quantities. Please see the Test Card Request Form (Microsoft Excel - Size: 29 kb) to submit an order.

Prepaid cards (live cards)

Prepaid cards have a monetary value associated with them, are equipped with Dynamic CVC3, and will submit a transaction from authorization to clearing. These transactions will be approved, and you will be able to validate DE compliance in both authorization and clearing for both credit and signature debit.

Please check with your acquirer for availability.

PayPass cards (live cards)

By successfully applying for a PayPass card from your financial institution, you and your acquirer will be able to monitor all types of test transactions from authorization to clearing. PayPass cards may be either debit or credit cards, depending on your bank’s offerings. The following Web site will help you choose a card:www.mastercard.us

Conduct Testing

Acquirer Testing

You should contact your acquirer to discuss compliance testing. Test compliance with requirements for your systems and for each new terminal type or version using cards provided by your acquirer.

  • For credit testing, use the online Member Test Facility and the MasterCard Credit Authorization Simulator.
  • For debit testing, use the online Debit Test Facility and the MasterCard Debit Authorization Simulator.

Note
MasterCard strongly recommends this testing with you and your acquirer.

Laboratory Testing

MasterCard recommends that you test PayPass in a controlled laboratory environment before installation at a live site.

End-to-End (Live) Testing

Once lab testing and installation are complete, an end-to-end set of test transactions should be conducted across all planned deployments, including pilot locations, roll-out locations, and locations added down the road. Here are key elements of an efficient and effective test:

  • Check for accurate tactical deployment of hardware (terminal, readers etc) and that appropriate DE-compliant (Data Element) software is running.
  • Perform an audit by using live test cards to perform credit, signature debit, and PIN Debit transactions. Validate the following for a magnetic stripe PayPass transaction:
    • Authorization logs for credit
      • Confirm DE 22.1 = 91 and DE 61.11 = 4
      • Confirm track data integrity
    • Clearing logs for credit
      • Confirm DE 22.1 = “A” and DE 22.7 = “A”
      • Confirm track data integrity
    • Authorization logs for signature debit
      • Confirm DE 22.1 = 91 and DE 61.11 = 4
      • Confirm track data integrity
    • Authorization logs for PIN Debit
      • Confirm DE 22.1 = 91 and DE 61.11 = 4

Create a “Lessons Learned” Document

To better support a regional or national rollout, create a “Lessons Learned” document. Describe any problems you encountered with lab or live testing-and how you successfully addressed the problem.

Troubleshoot Problems

Do not install the software and hardware in stores until testing is successful. Here are some troubleshooting scenarios and recommendations:

  • The cardholder is having troubling seeing and hearing prompt signals on the MasterCard PayPass reader. Are there external light sources and/or excessive noise? If so, confirm that the PayPass card was read, or ask the cardholder to tap the reader again and help them recognize the prompt signals.
  • The MasterCard PayPass reader display or lights are not on. Has the PayPass reader been unplugged or disconnected from the POS terminal or ECR? If so, reconnect the unit.
  • Payment information is not reaching the terminal, even though sound and light cues confirm the card has been read. Is the POS terminal or ECR connected correctly? If not, correctly establish connections. Perhaps the card was tapped before the merchant POS system was ready to receive it? If that’s the case, tap again once the reader has been activated.
